Students will learn the art of collage building through these foundational concepts — how to use paper as a medium, how to build a composition and how to use differences to create visual interest. will take them through three exercises using various papers, gel medium, water, brushes and scissors to explore techniques specific to each of the foundational concepts. Finally, they will use those techniques to build a collage on a small cradled wood panel. Students will leave the workshop with a wood panelled collage (that may or may not be finished depending on how fast they work) and a collection of completed exercises that they can refer back to when collaging at home.
Jolene Miner uses juicy colors and rich textures to create mixed media paintings and paper based works. Inspired by the unselfconscious exploration of materials and the transformational power of color and line, her art practice flows between painting, drawing, bookmaking and collage. Jolene earned her BFA from the University of Saskatchewan and now creates in her home studio in the bustling mountain town of Fernie, BC. You can find her work at the Fernie Arts Co-op and Art Gallery Kimberley.
